A lot of people seem to anticipate a coming great Paradigm shift or some massive change in human understanding that may somehow alter the political, economic and social trajectory of the World. But no one really has any idea how this may come about. So this talk explores the history of these sorts of happenings. We discover a hidden original source shared by most of the great historical currents that have brought us to where we are today, including the Enlightenment, the Renaissance, the rise of Modern Science, the genesis of Religion and World Spirituality; together with their influence on the social and political order, throughout history. This esoteric factor has also greatly influenced the Arts and many spheres of human creativity.
This hidden truth has also been the inspiration for Revolutionary movements which was what the first talk specifically examined in some detail; but also more generally it has been behind the very notion of progress, the stimulus for social change and it is what actually gave rise to the ‘Left Wing’, in the original 18th Century meaning of the term. That is, the factions opposing the state of affairs characterized by hereditary privilege, tyrannical rule, false religion; also social deprivation, injustice and inequality. A state of affairs which the world today seems to be heading back towards. What has been such a powerful determinant in history, if resurrected for the present, could be the ‘revolution in mental conceptions’ that people have been waiting for, and also the revival of political power against the power of money.
The crucial factor is the Hidden or Esoteric Religion. It is the Perennial wisdom of the God within and the idea of Micro-Cosmos of Self reflecting but also containing the Macro-Cosmos of the Universe. That somehow in our lives and in who we are, we contain the Transcendent and the Divine. This has been called Gnosis, Illumination, Infinite Consciousness, Enlightenment, Nirvana or the Kingdom of Heaven. When we examine how this idea has influenced the past then we can form a powerful picture of how we may influence the present to change the future.
This is a wide ranging talk, apart from being a broad historical survey, it’s also about the power of ideas and grand narratives, the problems of the present and what’s wrong with the world today; and will provide a blueprint for creating social movements that may radically change the course of things.
