Angela Needham has been active in politics since she campaigned for the then Liberal party in 1961. Angela joined the Green Party when it was still called the Ecology party, around 1981.
As a student, Angela Needham was chair of her university’s United Nations Student Association and was active in successful fundraising to enable a South African student to escape apartheid and obtain a university education.
In the 1970s Angela was involved in working for equal rights for the LGBT community.
In 1981, when Cruise missiles were mooted for Britain, Angela Needham became an activist in the peace movement. She was one of the three founders of Molesworth peace camp and practised and trained others in Non Violent Direct Action. She has also experienced three short prison trips in connection with protests at American military bases.
Angela was involved in support groups during the miners’ strike and in campaigning against both Iraq wars. Angela has also worked with Shelter and the Child Poverty Action Group, especially in campaigning for the use of plain English in documents needed by benefit applicants.
Angela Needham has served as an official in the Green Party, for a time in the mid 80s on the party’s health policy committee, and on the Green Party Standing Orders Committee.
In her spare time Angela is a keen bird watcher and enjoys doing surveys for the British Trust for Ornithology, Marinelife and the Bumblebee Conservation Trust.
